So it’s finally come! The horrid last day, where you sit lazily thinking about all the fun you’ve had and how you’ve got to return to some dank, wet, snowed in village where the people (even the adults) compulsively throw stupid taunts about you having long hair at you in public. Don’t want to go
But at least I’m leaving happy, I’ll want to come next year an see the old faces, surf and escape from the world for a month again! All I’ve done today is pack and surf. Ooh! Bought presents for people as well. It’s a really horible feeling where you miss home, your friends/partner, doing things the “british” way. But at the same time you love being able to sit in a chair, drink dirty bottles of fanta, watch the sea and generally be a fully fledged beach bum.
Getting up at 6am to get a mini bus o the airport, take of at 1pm and then land at 8pm the same day due to the magic and wizardry of time zones! Like before I’ll write anything that flies through my head during the journey and I’ll try doing more stunts with airplane toilets and bog roll!
So yeah, about half an hour ago, I was happily surfing the waves and then a big one flipped me of whils I was crusing along, then cracked me on the head with a 7 ft long board! It was funny but dizzy and painful :p
New years eve soon! Time for another huge party at Mambos
Twas rather good! The party started all along the beach from about 8pm Christmas eve and didn’t stop til dawn. The lankans treat Christmas eve with more importance xD Christmas day is “recovery day”. If you ever get chance, get drunk and try venturing into a dark jungle to find your way home. Snakes like the dark
In other news, I was sat on the water waiting for a wave and two frickin’ huge turtles (slightly bigger than 6ft mans torso) popped up and smiled at me! Well ok, they came up for air but it’s pratically the same thing! The surf is really starting to get huge now, 6/7ft waves xD it gets to the point where I don’t want to risk a mouthful of sand/brown surf shorts and I have to switch to a body board to catch the bloody things! Anyway hope everyone had a White Christmas back in the UK, mine was settling down with a beer and a golden sunset, followed by too much redbull and vodka, although at the moment it’s thundering which is kinda scary. The thunder gets really close to the sea!
Anyway I’ve gotten all the photos sorted out so far and am forcing myself down to the Internet cafe to upload em to picasa, I’ll have them up in ~4 hours.
So today I went to galle to sort out a child savings account that I’d had since 1997. We all hopped on a huge minibus to galle which took roughly an hour to get there. The fee for 25km of travel? 20 rupees! (7 pence).
Upon arival we all hit the southern Ceylon bakery for “short eats”, a kind of fast food where a large plate of snack-like breads and baked munchies is brought to your table and you eat what ever you like off the plate and they figure what you owe them by counting the remaining short eats once you’r finished. There’s everything from fish buns to vegatable rolls to egg buns. Tis rather swell!
Eventually we arrived at the bank of Ceylon in galle fort to spend two and a half bloody hours getting bank accounts sorted! But it did mean getting my hands on 24,630 rupees! Figures that interest rates in Sri Lankan bank savers accounts is increadably high. So over the years I’ve earnt about 50/60 quid in interest xD Bank security is also brilliant; upon entry to the bank there’s one security guard that opens the door for you and another stood oposite carrying a freakin’ 12-gauge!
Well now I’ve got to go back to the bank in 2 weeks and pick up my bank card so i can use the local ATMs, that’s going to be interesting!
Yup, earlier today I went along minding my own business, unlocking my front gate to go for a morning surf and THUD, a coconut lands about 1 meter to my right! Well the pants wern’t brown but it was pretty scary!
The surfs picking up now; the waves are less white water and are now a reasonable size so I’m starting to have fun on the beach (caught a 7 footer)! Sun burn has completely cleared up aswell
Tomorrow I head to Galle (the nearby city) for the day! It’s a great opportunity to by random stuff I don’t really need, but really want. There’s also the fort and cricket grounds there so I’m gonna take lots of pictures!
Anyway i’ll be posting the photos of the trip so far and another vid that I quickly made whilst bored later so stay tuned!
Severe sunburn for the lose! My arms, back and face are incredably red/painful and i feel like the sun! Yeah it’s kept me out of the water for a few days, but that doesn’t matter ’cause ive got mutha hubin’ man bag! Oh yeah, now I can walk around in pure manly style whilst carrying everything but the kitchen sink. Fo sho!
It’s really hot at the moment so I always have to carry a towel with me as my forehead has a tendency to pee all over my face. Which when you order something at a bar and sweat starts pouring down your nose and onto the counter, is kinda embarasing.
I’m aiming to get a photo gallery sorted out soon so i can also dump carp loads of photos of stuff that I think looks cool (grammar fail)?
The surf’s really naf at the moment but as soon as it picks up, I’ll see if I can get some footage of me bailing and getting a mouthful of sand.
Here’s a collection of things that I experienced/decided to talk about over the 13 hour flight, armed with an iPod touch:
Wooooop! Just took off, silly website died whilst we were checking in online; so Mum and I are stuck right at the back of the plane, sucks but that’s what I get for using MODERN TECHNOLOGY! Can’t see out of any windows due to the crappy booking thingy but my ears are starting to pop so at least we’re going upwards.
Mmm, chicken curry whilst watching Disney’s “UP”, pretty awesome. The food’s greatly improved, I can actually eat this stuff: Normally it’s eating packed sandwiches, feeling sick and claustrophobic whilst everyone else’s horrible food surrounds me and makes me want to hurl. Mmm, That was really good
Ok this sucks, the shitty onboard computer game thing just completely owned me at backgammon on easy mode, mleh bring on the Tetris! Right got bored of that, now listening to some weird bangra/rave… stuff, not my kinda thing. But wait! What’s this!? YES! It’s what sounds like the best of ABBA in Mexican! (Please for the love of god don’t ask and yes I’m not lying. That was “super trooper” in anything other than English). Nap time!
Right, sleeping here is like sleeping in one of those machines they use to crush cars. I’m pretty convinced that a midget has gone into the crapper and flushed himself down and out of the plane, the bloody “engaged” sign as been on for about 5 hours now and I really need to go D: YES! The little bastard gained super powers, flew up, crawled back into the plane and left the loo! (Turns out that it was some 5’7”ish guy but whatever, lack of realistic perception is a known side effect of needingacrapitis). I also now have a profound fear of aircraft toilets: Did my thing, pressed flush, it vacuumed, I washed my hands and as I went to close the lid, it started frantically attempted to suck me in! Don’t like aircraft bogs D: To cheer up, tried that thing done in a YouTube video where you lead toilet roll out of the toilet bowl and onto the floor and then press the flush button, it really does suck the entire length of roll down the bog!
Woop! Landed in Malé; the largest of the islands that make the Maldives Islands and am really envious of the pilot. The runway is incredibly short (almost the length of the island) and the pilot managed to come to a complete stop ¾ of the way down! I keep falling back into the sea in Microsoft Flight Sim X D: Then again, I’m glad that the pilot can do it otherwise I’d be swimming right now. Refuelerizing… Please wait……. Back in the air! ONE HOUR TO GOOOOO!
Just picked up the bags from the conveyor belt in Colombo Airport, grabbed two litters of whisky (and they’re not even for me!) from the duty free and am now in the minibus on the way home. A few things to mention: There was a solider stood near the entrance/exit to the airport looking all strong and formal, and rather than carrying the countries’ latest military innovation in weaponry he had a freakin’ Uzi strapped to his chest! SO KEWL!!! The all too popular punch to the face by the external humidity of Sri Lanka’s atmosphere actually took me by surprise this time! If you’ve never experienced it, imagine running into a really hot brick wall. Kinda like that, without the bricks, just a very precise wall of hot air that slaps you as you walk into it. This sucks nob, we’ve been in the mini bus for 3 bloody hours now and haven’t cleared Colombo D: then again, we did leave during rush hour on a Monday evening (4:45pm). Finally got home, left Colombo airport at 4:30pm, got to Hikk (Just a quicker way of saying Hikkaduwa) at 8:10pm. I’ve just done 24 hours of continuous travelling from getting on the Piccadilly line train to Heathrow terminal 4 to Hikk. Wow… Feel like death at the moment, going to sleep. I’ll press letters on this little screen tomorrow once I wake up.
After a bit of tinkering, I’ve finally gotten this bloody thing sorted out!
The journal, (blog sounds boring), is primarily here so I can post photos and videos of random goings on. Hopefully it’ll get big, get thousands of page views a month and I can reap the benefits of banner ad’s by earning lots of money! Meh, maybe not…
Any who, that’s it for now, gonna put a random video in to test the youtube embedding plug-in I’ve got running
Have fun, and hopefully I’ll keep this updated!
(Sorry IE users, got bored of having to fix problems for non W3C compliant browsers a long time ago). You could always try switching to Chrome, Firefox or Safari.
